The Leaf Professor stands waiting, deep inside a campus of glasshouses. Orange leaves cascade onto a village of mechatronic plantlife, all of which are wistfully rotating limbs of pseudo-solar-panel to follow electromagnetic waves rather than photosynthesis. The EM waves Morse out of matrices of vectorized wall-emitters. Mostly invisible, I can see the faintest of fuchsia glows roll across the dark spots of treeshade.
Professor Theo Perdon strokes bushy mutton-chops and pushes heavy-framed glasses back in place. Without saying a word, he materializes his Prime Character to the empty glasshouse floor between us. Autumn Signalstag stands statue-tall, in metalline form of horned deer. Its head is crowned by radio antennae rather than antlers, and six brown eyes wrap around in three-sixty. Beneath its frame of strength, I feel a loneliness.
