Back in the 90s, Aphex Twin used the term “Ambient” to name an album filled with drums. That fact gives permission for percussion-driven tracks like this one to emerge on an EP already branded “ambient.” It is understandably not ideal for everyone – especially for those looking for a more pure “ambient” throughline.
On the other hand, one effective creative practice is to listen to “where the track wants to go” itself. In this case, DDA03 “wanted” drums to fill out a groove, while trying to maintain an ambient atmosphere.
