Back in Furnace Tracker after the previous track experiment with Renoise – the vibrato function gives a lot of character to leads, making them “closer” to a human voice. In retrospect, this technique is used widely across chiptune music of the 80s and 90s.

There is also the realization that chiptune leads should have breaks in time to “breath” like a human voice would too. While it is not at all necessary on a technical level, it does sound better. This is likely because our ears have been trained on music of the human voice, and all the nuances that come with using it.
